Pretoria, 7 October 2019 – Gelato Festival Challenge continues its journey around the world making a stop at The Coolest Fest in The Grove Mall in Pretoria, Johannesburg on October 5TH where 11 South African gelato artisans took part in the sweetest competition of the year hosted by Arbonia, Carpigiani distributor for South Africa. The winning flavors are “Macadamia praline” by Ayesha Kajee of Gelato Studio in Johannesburg (Macadamia gelato with praline sheds), “Apple Pie Gelato” by Michael Dube of Aroma Gelato in Pretoria (Cream Gelato with variegato crostata, cinnamon, apple variegato & cookies), “Gin & marmalade” by Karin Loots of The Ice Creamery in Pretoria (Milk gelato with locally-produced gin infused with roasted oranges and cinnamon) and “Pistacchio” by Sandro Tomassetti of La Cremosa in Johannesburg.
The four selected gelato artisans go on to the 2020 Africa Final, the next step of the Gelato Festival World Masters championship, where the one African chef who will represent the continent at the 2021 World Final will be selected. Flavor, structure, creativity and presentation are the four parameters used for the evaluation, highlighting the choice of ingredients, the craftsmanship in elaborating the recipe and the visual impact of the gelato.
