Gelato Festival World Masters, the main category tournament with partners Carpigiani and Sigep - Italian Exhibition Group, is on its new journey around the globe in search of the world’s best gelato. On October 23rd and 24th it arrived in São Paulo for a two-day event in which 31 gelato makers participated in the sweetest competition of the year organized by Carpigiani’s distributor 3L Locações e Serviços. For each day of the Challenge, the three best-ranked participants were elected winners.
The 6 winning gelato artisans and the best gelato artisans in Brazil for 2024 are:
DAY 1
1. Dario Hideki of ÀMei Gelato e Doces in São Paulo (SP) with the flavor “3 Canas”
Descrpition: Alembic cachaça gelato, white chocolate flakes with lemon zest and cane molasses.
2. Neztor Bertrand of MOOI MOOI in São Paulo (SP) with the flavor “Maiz, migas, toffee de alho negro, pipoca”
Descrpition: Corn gelato, black garlic toffee, corn crumbs with chocolate.
3. Vinicius B. Buffon of Così Gelato in Bento Gonçalves (RS) with the flavor “La Cucagna”
Descrpition: Milk and ricotta gelato scented with thyme, "Uvada" (homemade grape jelly) with peel, almond flour "Sfregolá" (crumble) and fresh thyme.
DAY 2
1. Gabriela A. M. Zorzal of Blu Gelatos in Domingos Martins (ES) with the flavor "Sorbet de gabiroba gigante, castanhas da mata atlântica, frutas vermelhas e mel de uruçu”
2. Aline Vieira of Flor do Ingá in Maringá (PR) with the flavor "Doce Encanto”
Descrpition: Blue cheese gelato with Rangpur lime jam.
3. Henrique Consone of Ilgiorno Gelato in Brasília (DF) with the flavor "Harmonia Mediterrânea”
Descrpition: Soft gorgonzola gelato with Port wine reduction, roasted figs and caramelized pistachios.
The selected gelato artisans will advance to the Brazilian Finals of Gelato Festival World Masters scheduled for 2025. Flavor, structure, creativity and presentation are the four parameters used for the evaluation, highlighting the choice of ingredients, the craftsmanship in elaborating the recipe and the visual impact of the gelato (see below the full list of participants).
The jury was composed of:
- Paulo Bueno – Journalist and active in the A&B sector since 1988, entrepreneur and co-owner of MilK&Mellow;
- Saiko Izawa - Executive Pastry Chef at the Rosewood São Paulo Hotel;
- Franklin Bin – Pastry Chef, Vice-Champion MasterChef Professionals 5;
- Heaven Delhaye - Chef and television presenter, Finalist of the third season of MasterChef Professionals in Brazil;
- Luca Gozzani – Fasano Group Executive Chef.
Gelato Festival debuted in Florence in 2010, inspired by the creation of the first gelato recipe by the versatile architect Bernardo Buontalenti in 1559. Since then, the event has expanded its borders, first to the rest of Italy, then to Europe and – starting in 2017 – the United States, with a total of 80 Festivals held, before embracing the entire planet with the world championship of Gelato Festival World Masters 2021, which concluded in December 2021 - with the victory of Adam Fazekas from Budapest - and saw a record of 3,500 gelato artisans judged by international juries.
